This is still being built, advice and ideas are encouraged and appreciated!
This adventure is intended to be a “larger than life” tall tale. Participants are encouraged to pull out their “hero” characters, and while keeping them realistic on some level, to have fun and create a character that fits the mythic settings and the irreverent tale. Think Indiana Jones, Sahara, the Mummy. Please avoid god-characters or magic-users, and keep them human, as this isn’t a magical setting, but otherwise, have fun with them!
Characters should be mercenary, adventurous, tougher than nails, and ready for anything.
The adventure of the Pantanal begins in the river-town of San Miguel Lorenzo y Baptista, a crime-ridden mercenary city sitting astride the Paraguay River. An old, demented man has stumbled out of the marshes, carrying a ragged, blurred map drawn on human skin, claiming to have found the legendary La Canela, the Valley of Cinnamon that the Conquistadors had searched for so hard.
A wealthy land-owner hears the story that is running over the town like wildfire, and lures the lunatic to his estate, where he examines the map and extensively questions locations, rewards, and the trail to the valley. The man claims that the map was cut from the back of the last living man of his party after he had succumbed to fever, and that he had returned only through the greatest difficulty.
Still skeptical, the land owner is ready to turn the man back into the streets when the old coot, desperate, pulls a chunk of rock from his pocket. It is a chunk of pure diamond, of quality rarely seen. The land owner buys the map and gives the man a room at his estate. Sending one of his cattle-bosses into town, he has notices posted at each tavern and whore-house. “Wanted: adventurers with desire for wealth and adventure, to discover legendary valley La Canela. Apply in person at Taverna Solista on March 25. Rewards high.”
The adventure will begin in the tavern. The setting is modern times. _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Sweet. Looking good guys, I'll start working on a character either tonight or tomorrow.
Might I suggest we put together some kind of equipment list? Its really useful for reference. In several of the other RP's I've been in, we used this site as a modern firearms guide: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
I assume this is set in modern times, please correct me if its not. _________________ "There are those to whom knowledge is a shield, and those to whom it is a weapon. Neither view is balanced, but one is less unwise."-Keepers' Annals. |

Havoc has graciously agreed to put together an item list for us! Loxley took care of that a few days ago.
Yes, it is in modern times, but no specific year. _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Speak for yourself Loxley about getting moving. I'd have dragged something out, but Havoc's will be a thousand times better.
Again, thank you Havoc! As soon as that's up, I'll do an introductory post so people can see what this is really about. _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Okay, here is a short list thus far. It is still a WIP, but I thought I'd get something up for you guys.
I am using my Wastelands gear stuff as a base for this. I'll let you two decide on how much cash to give the starting players.
There are four kinds of gear: armors, weapons, equipment and vehicles. The last one for this thread is going to probably be very limited due to what Loxley has shared with me, and a little impractical for the environment (save for boats).
Just like Wastelands, these things can be crafted and made to suit your needs.
Armors
Starting: This is just the shirt on your back. 0 slots Can be sold for 5 dollars.
Light Armor: This is just simple leathers and stuff like that. They'll protect you from the small stuff and the elements. 2 slots, 50 dollars
Medium Armor: Heavier stuff that can stop some of the more dangerous stuff you're likely to encounter, especially when dealing with thugs or whatever. 4 slots 100 dollars
Heavy Armor: I fail to see why you'd need this in an adventure setting, if only because it's designed to stop high-caliber rounds and for use in warfare! This stuff has the greatest survivability of all armors 4 slots, 500 bucks.
Currently, I am unsure if I should include shields. If I were, it would probably be something like riot shields, but then again, given the modern setting, they probably wouldn't serve that much a purpose.
Weapons
Close Combat Weapons:
-Machete: I think everyone should start with this weapon/tool. They are kinda a requirement for hacking through the jungle and anyone who gets in your way. 0 slots 10 bucks if you wanna buy or sell it.
-Light Close Combat Weapon: This is something simple, like a knife or your machete, but a little sharper and designed for defense. 1 slot 25 dollars.
-Medium Close Combat Weapon: A balance between the light and heavy weapons, this is like Indy's whip, or a sword. 2 slots, 75 dollars
-Heavy Close Combat Weapon: Big, heavy and guaranteed to cause a lot of gore if it's bladed, this is like a combat staff, ax, hammer, or if you are feeling bold, cattle prods! 3 slots, 100 dollars
Ranged Weapons:
This is identical to the Wastelands list.
-Handguns: 2 slots 25 dollars.
-Submachine Guns: 4 slots, 75 dollars.
-Assault Rifles: 6 slots, 100 dollars
-Sniper Rifles: 6 slots, 150 dollars
-Shotguns: 5 slots, 100 dollars
I have removed the grenade launchers and machine guns because they are so big and kinda unwieldy. However, they could be added in again as 'reward weapons' for players who complete certain objectives or whatever.
Equipment
Again, borrowing from Wastelands, here is a list of some of the more useful things that you can use.
-Lockpick: Just that. 0 slots, 5 dollars
-Rope: A very useful thing to have. I am sure you can think of the uses. 0 slots, 10 dollars.
-Multi-purpose tool: Just that! Sure you can think of uses for a tool like this. Maybe you need to fix something? This’ll do that. 0 slots, 25 dollars.
-Flashlight: Something nice to have when it’s dark out. Bright enough too to temporarily blind some people too if it’s dark! 0 slots, 25 dollars.
-Backpack: Simple backpack. Don't leave home without it! (Unless you have a compressor) 0 slots 5 dollars.
-Climbing gear- Includes 50ft rope, grapel, climbing spikes, and harness. 0 slots $30
-Canteen: Something to store your water in. 20 dollars.
-Camelback: A backpack with a huge bladder you fill with water. 100 dollars.
-USMC MRE: United States Marine MREs that were found on the black market. Not the most apetizing of meals, but when you're desperate, sometimes a freeze-dried meal can do wonders, if you can stomach the taste! 25 dollars.
-Butane Cooker: A small stove designed for camping. 50 dollars.
-Water Filter: Though there is plenty of water in the rainforest, it can contain some very nasty things! This filter will clean out the microbes and parasites that can ruin your day. 100 dollars.
-GOOP! Energy Gel: GOOP! is a specially-designed supplement that can be consumed to restore energy. Though not always the most appetizing of things, it can be good if you find yourself lacking in the Red Bull department. Recommended you wash it down with some water. 10 for 50 bucks.
Medicines:
-Basic First-Aid Kit: The simple first-aid kit. Not the most advanced thing, but useful. 100 dollars
-Advanced First-Aid Kit: Bigger and better version of the smaller kit. This includes some of the nicer things and includes cures for some of the more common ailments in the region. 200 dollars.
-Doctor's Bag: This is the most advanced of the medical supplies. Like the heavy body armor, this is more suited to a warzone, but includes virtually everything you'll ever need. 500 dollars.
Hand Grenades:
-Happy Fun Ball!: A small orange ball that bounces quite well. You can make out the words ‘Made in China’ on the equator of it. Would make a great distraction. Does not explode, and therefore, can be reused to distract someone. Just be sure to pick it up again! 0 slots. 5 dollars.
-Frag grenade: A fragmentation grenade. 1-time use. 2 for 50 dollars.
-Incendiary grenade: An incendiary grenade. 1-time use and be careful not to get caught in the blast! 1 for 50 dollars.
-Flashbang grenade: A stun grenade. 1-time use, and be sure to cover your ears and eyes! 1 for 75 dollars.
-Teargas or Sleeping Gas Grenade: A useful less-than-lethal weapon for crowd control! 25 dollars for two.
Explosives:
-Dynamite: A stick of dynamite. Enough said. 1-time use. BE VERY CAREFUL how you use it. 1 stick for 100 dollars. Fuse included.
-Unstable Plastic Explosive: Somewhat unstable plastic explosive. Could go off if you light a match near it! More power than a stick of dynamite. 1 glob for 150 dollars. Detonators included
-C4 Plastic Explosive: Best explosive you can get. Highly stable and highly destructible. 1 brick for 200 dollars. Detonators included.
-Claymore mines: Explosives designed to be used against soft-armored infantry. 1-time use. Can either be a tripwire or remotely detonated. $150 for 1
CRAFTING
Again, this is tricking your gear out. This list is no where near as big as the Wastelands one though.
Bodyarmor mounts:
-Hidden Pockets: extra place to hide something. Allows easier access to things. 1 slot. 5 dollars.
-Pouched harness: A harness worn that has numerous pouches for things. Better version of the hidden pockets. 2 slots 20 dollars.
-Tactical Vest: Best pockets upgrade. Also offers a little more protection. 2 slots, 100 dollars.
- Ghillie suit: This is a bodyarmor mod. Takes 1 slot. This is a simple camouflage upgrade which makes you a little harder to pick out in the desert when you're still. If you move slowly, then you can hide! HOWEVER, you are not invisible with this, so if you're standing and all, you'll be picked out very easily. This upgrade costs $200
-Reinforced threading: Increases the survivability of the armor at the cost of weight. 1 slot. 10 dollars.
-Ceramic Discs: Works a series of discs into simple or soft bodyarmor making a scaled effect. 2 slots. 100 dollars.
Ranged-Weapon Mounts
-Scope: Hope I don’t need to explain this! 1 slot, 10 dollars.
-Infrared Scope: Again, hope I don’t need to explain it. 1 slot, 25 dollars.
-Mounted Flashlight: Just a flashlight mounted to the weapon. 1 slot, 15 dollars.
-Forward Handgrip: Allows for easier steadying of the weapon. Only for Submachine Guns Assault Rifles and Shotguns. 1 slot, 15 dollars.
-Bipod: VERY useful device for steadying a weapon, but only when stationary. Only for Sniper Rifles and . 1 slot, 15 dollars.
-Personal Grenade Launcher: A small grenade launcher (like the M203). Can only be fitted to Submachine Guns and Assault Rifles. 4 slots, 80 dollars.
-Silencer: Muffles the weapon’s bang! Cannot be used with a Shotgun. Is not affected by the Picatinny Rail mod. 1 slot, 50 dollars.
-Duckbill: Widens spray of Shotgun. Can only be used by Shotguns. 4 slots, 10 dollars.
Magazine Mounts
-Standard: Just your run of the mill bullets. Tracer rounds included, unless you are in the state of California where tracer rounds are illegal. $0.
-Incendiary: High-powered rounds that can do a number! $20
-Armor Piercing: Designed to punch through armor. $50
-Door Breech (shotgun only): Designed to allow you to 'access all areas'. Also does a number if you get hit by one of 'em! $100
-Solid Slug (shotgun only): A solid slug of a shotgun round. Does massive damage, but has short range! $100
Ranged-Weapons Mods
-Picatinny Rail: A bracket on some firearms that allow for easy placement of mounts. Cuts mounting costs in half, unless it specifically says it doesn’t. (For example, a scope normally takes 1 slot, whereas the picatinny rail would make it cost half a slot to mount, whereas the silencer you still have to pay full cost). 2 slots, 40 dollars.
-Improved Rifling: Improves the rifling of a gun’s barrel so the bullet is more accurate. Cannot be used on a Shotgun. 20 dollars, 2 slots.
-Improved Stock: Improves the weapon’s stock so it absorbs more recoil. Cannot be used on a Handgun. 2 slots, 25 dollars.
-Combat Blades: Works blades onto the rifle allowing for it to be used in close-combat. 2 slots, 30 dollars.
-Magnum: Allows the weapon to chamber magnum rounds. Can only be used on handguns and sniper rifles. 2 slots, 50 dollars for a handgun, 100 for a sniper rifle.
So, there we are so far. You two take a look and share your thoughts and if you want me to add anything. Vehicles will be added later as I'm still figuring out how to work 'em in. _________________ "The carping and bickering of political factions in the nation's capitol reminds me of two pelicans quarreling over a dead fish." -William Tecumseh Sherman |

I love your Bouncy Ball of Fun, that's brilliant.
Anyways, what about making the vehicles include some sort of amphibious thing used in jungle warfare? I'd actually prefer to stay away from that and just have boats that are provided by the employer for the first part of the journey, we can use horses or mules later where the terrain becomes less stable. But let's see what Loxley says.
This looks really good... How much did you allocate for Wastelands money wise?
My character is a sniper, so I get all the cool toys, yay! _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Well, I was thinking my character will have a boat, probably a sloop, since he works gold dredges in bi-rivers of the Paraguay river and would need one. It'll be purely for the travelling of the party and I probably won't use it in later adventures. Also as Ms. Pickles said, we'll probably abandon it later on in the story for mules and horses, since the river can only take us so far in our direction.
As I see it, though is this; if you want vehicles, you can have them, but they probably won't be of much use in this particular adventure, partly because of my character's boat if everyone agrees to that idea, but mostly because the terrain is varied, and sooner or later, you'll probably have to abandon said vehicle when the terrain doesn't allow you to procede with it.
As for money, we got 2000 bucks in Wasteland, I think. It should be able to cut for our equipment here as well. My character for one is an adventurer, not a mercenary, so he won't be carrying much in guns and weapon equipment and stuff, so me for one, I'll be able to make do with far less than two thousand.
But I say we do it democracy-wise and let everyone who want to join this adventure have their say. _________________ "Women don't want to marry adventurers. That means I'll never marry." Corto Maltese |

Democracy? What's that?
2000 sounds great, Bloody Fingers has a bit of a fetish for things that hurt, so she'll be carrying plenty of things that go "boom" in one way or another.
And boom is a sound made by her favorite blunt weapons too! _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Well, no, but a nice wooden walking stick with reinforced ends and some pointy stuff in strategic places can make quite an impression on people...
Yeah, I'm bloodthirsty. Swords are wonderful, and I love katana type blades, but nothing is as satisfying as a good blunt weapon. Rebar is another excellent alternative! _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

No objections here.
So, shall we decide upon 2000 bucks for the taking, then? Then we'll see what happens with the vehicles. Gott damn it, this will be really fun, I must say. I love South America. _________________ "Women don't want to marry adventurers. That means I'll never marry." Corto Maltese |

2000 it is then. Vehicles, yeah, let's leave those out for now, unless you want to have base-price horses or something. _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Alright. :p Ve3hciles I was thinking that it would just be very simple things. And from what you said earlier, and given the place, vehicles can only play a role on roads and the waterways. The jungle is dense and unless youv'e got like a tank or something, then you're not gonna have an easy time! besides, vehicles can be big and noisy! So, leaving out vehicles for the moment is probably the best idea.
2k bucks works too. _________________ "The carping and bickering of political factions in the nation's capitol reminds me of two pelicans quarreling over a dead fish." -William Tecumseh Sherman |

Alright, I say we go with 2k then. I'm going to edit this post and upload my character after Alex Jones Show today. Also, I'm working from the assumption that nobody has anything to object about using my character's boat travelling up the river. Since it's part of the story and not really the character I'm not going to write it into my character's sheet.
(Even so, my gear wages up to about 800 bucks, so there'd have been enough dough to buy a boat if we'd have worked that system out more.)
Well, later tonight it is, then.
Edit:
Alrighty then, this is my dawg. I've worked from assuming that rules for weapons are as follow - and this is what I suggested to Havoc, but despite Mornara's anti-democratic tendencies, let's hear what you think of it:
2 knives - advised is 1 machete for rough work, and 1 smaller knife for delicate work
2 pistols,
as well as 1 "long" weapon - including everything from shotguns and submachine-guns (small ones, like Mac-10 and Micro-Uzi, I think could be considered pistols, but just my thoughts now), to assault rifles and sniper rifles.
So, anyways, here's the dude:
Derrick Cole
Not much is known about the adventurer Derrick Cole - even those that call themselves his friends do not know much about his past other than that it's blood-soaked. What is known though, is that he is of South-African decent, and that he is a former member of the French Foreign Legion's 2nd Airborne Regiment. Despite this he doesn't act like a soldier or soldier of fortune, but rather like a rugged and undisciplined adventurer, which is exactly what he is.
Cole works as an illegal gold prospector in Brazil, captaining the PT boat "the Black Goose", on the Paraguay river. He operates several gold dredges in it's bi-rivers, and from time to time makes extra coin from poaching. He works alone, except for his constant friend and companion, an Indian pet mongoose named Biggles, of whom he is obviously very fond of.
Cole is a wild and adventurous, unpredictable man. Flirty with the ladies, but reliable for his friends and merciless against his enemies, he is a fearsome enemy and a man of a kind which few exists these days. He believes in enjoying life to the fullest, and doesn't care as much about money, as living life well. When he's not working, he does exactly that, by drinking much and hard, and flirting with ladies - be they prostitutes or not, usually at the local taverns, which has given him a name as somewhat of a womanizer.
Cole doesn't like civilization - he knows he does not belong there, and he know he would grow bored if he ever went back to it. Since he is an adventurous spirit, he has travelled all over the world, and will continue to do so, but for now, he has made a home for himself in the Pantanal region. Here, he plans to stay until his spirit tell him it is time to move on - and only when that time comes will he know where to travel next.
Weapons:
CAR-15 + scope and flashlight, 125$
(Pistol) Vektor SP-1 25$
(Pistol) Tangfolio T95 (10 mm) 25$
Machete 10$
Glock 81 Survival knife 25$
Other gear:
Light armor with Pouched harness upgrade, 70$
Rope 10$
Multi-Purpose tool kit 25$
Backpack 5$
Canteen 20$
USMC MRE's 25$
Butane cooker 50$
Water filter 100$
GOOP! Energy gel 10 for 50$
Advanced First Aid Kit 200$
Stick of dynamite, 1stick 100$
GPS system, 200$
Wire-Saw 10$
Eveready Strike-Anywhere Matches, 20 for 20$
1095$
(Edited to clarify a few things. Gah! Why do I only discover these things once I've already posted it? Stupid computer...)
Edited to add equipment. _________________ "Women don't want to marry adventurers. That means I'll never marry." Corto Maltese

Adrian Eckhard
Age:28
Height: 6'2"
Appearance: Tall and burly, this muscular man carries himself with confidence. He has the blue eyes and blond hair of his German ancestors, although his skin is deeply tanned from his time in the tropics.
Personal history: Born in Hamburg, one of the largest cities in northern Germany. His father served in the German army during the Cold War, and his grandfather was a captain in the Wehrmacht during WWII. Following the family tradition, Adrian joined the army after graduating from the University of Hamburg, quickly gaining a reputation as a dedicated and hard-working soldier. Disappointed with the lack of action in the regular army, Adrian applied and was accepted into the KSK, the German elite special forces. His desire for action was satisfied, as he participated in classified operations in Bosnia and Kosovo. Although praised for his steady devotion to the mission, he was also reprimanded by his commanding officer for his seemingly casual attitude towards the lives of those around him. A subsequent mission in Libya ended in disaster when Adrian's squad was ambushed by insurgent forces. Though shot several times, Adrian managed to shoot his way out of the trap. The rest of his team was not so fortunate, all were killed. Adrian resigned his commission a week later. He traveled to the United States, gradually finding his way down to Mexico. There, a drug deal gone bad provided him with his first taste of action in the New World. His expert disposal of three thugs brought him to the attention of the local cartel, who attempted to kill him. Adrian escaped, fleeing deeper into Central America. He worked his way down the peninsula, finally ending up in Colombia. His expert skills enabled him to find employment as a merc, working for various drug cartels. A government raid on his current employer exposed his involvement, so he headed even further south, deep into Brazil. He traveled by river, eventually ending up in the town of San Miguel Lorenzo y Baptista. With little of interest beyond petty crime in the city, Adrian is currently looking for anything that promises the action and money he craves.
Personality: Adrian's originally open and friendly personality has been tempered by years in the slums and cartels of Central and South America. He easily makes friends, and just as easily shoots them down when they turn on him. As a mercenary, he has learned to trust no one but himself, although he is secretly lonely for the intense camaraderie of his KSK days. Adrian's time as a merc has made him cynical about fame and power. He is only looking for one thing: enough money to retire and found his own business for recruiting and employing other "independent contractors".

I'll get my character in soon, I'm too tired and busy right now. These guys look really good! _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Joe “Bloody Fingers” Russell, mercenary, sniper, sometime cage-fighter, sex-fiend, and all around trouble maker.
Not much is known about her past, she tells a different story each time, but she’s got a known history up to about ten years ago, then it’s just gone. Not there. Some say she’s Israeli Mossad, others that she’s come from Ireland and has connections to the crime world. With her coppery red hair, and a slight accent, Ireland is the usual suspect.
She admits to having run the streets as a kid, and having been involved in organized crime until the guy she was shacking up with got himself killed. Since then, she’s just drifted from one job to the next.
Whatever her story is, she’s a definite asset to any operation. Deadly with a sniper rifle, she has the patience and steady hand needed to wait out any target, and the cold-bloodedness to kill anyone she’s paid enough for. She’s not a fan of smaller guns though, and doesn’t carry any really modern weapon except for the sniper rifle, and a few grenades, which are considered tons of fun. Especially flash-bang grenades in a bar fight.
She’s a also a brutal melee fighter, preferring close-range, blunt weapons or a good army knife. She also collects weapons, especially German, Israeli, and street-weapons, including a highly-prized Walther WA2000 that she took in a job, and an Erma SR100, among many others.
Her temper matches her red hair, and she’s a born pessimist. Don’t question her honesty or ask if she really means what she says. If this girl makes a promise, she’ll keep it, come life or death. But she has a sadistic, dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and she definitely can take as much as she dishes out.

Looking good, looking good...
So, remind me again - what was the difference between you and your character?
And, does this mean we're ready to get started? Or are there others who want to join up as well? _________________ "Women don't want to marry adventurers. That means I'll never marry." Corto Maltese |

Well, I technically didn't grow up on the streets, and I'm not from Ireland OR Israel. But since damn near everyone thinks I have an accent of some sort, it doesn't matter much. And a few other little things, but hey, it's me on steroids sorta. We wanted to play our alter-egos, right? _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Jonathan Anderson
Age: 31
Height: 5' 11"
A tall lanky Scraggaly man with black hair that some might say gets in his face to much. A scar accross his face is his one marking feature but dont ask him to much about it. He is a rutheless man to the core who is never questioned twice because noone ever dares question him once.
If you can see John than you're either safe or dead. He likes to not be seen and he has an odd fetish with close combat knives, although he prefers to be far away with his personalised sniper rifle. Very outdoorsy man who hunts for his own food in the wild.
He has lived in Brazil now for five years doing mercenary work after being discharged from the Army for being reckless. He is only interested in two things now. Money, and killing anyone in his way that is preventing him from getting money.
He has unmatched sniping abilities. Those who have seen him say he can hit a fly from a mile away, others can't say much of anything after realising his skill.
Equiptment:
Light Armor w/Ghilli Suit- $250
Machete- $0
Small Combat Knife- $25
Model Replica Colt w/Magnum 1873- $75
Russian SVN-98 w/Magnum - $250
Rope, Multipurpose Tool, Backback, Climbing Gear, Canteen, Butane Cooker, Water Filter- $240
Basic First-Aid Kit- $100
Scope+Infared Scope- $35
Bipod- $15
Silencer- $50
Standard and AP rounds -$50
Picatinny Rail- $40
Improved Rifling and Stock- $45
That should be it, also can i have a crosbow and night vision for scope? A modern crossbow not a Medivel one. I will be away for a day or so. I wont be able to add or edit anything till about Sat. night _________________

I'll be hopping into this one soon as school ends for the summer. Already thinking of a character. _________________ "The carping and bickering of political factions in the nation's capitol reminds me of two pelicans quarreling over a dead fish." -William Tecumseh Sherman |
