In my next novel, The character who will be the main focus (in conjunction with Fahd Morbis) will be a young man who wants absolutely nothing to do with the story.
He will deny his talents
He will deny his place in events
He will not be cooperative with me (the writer)
And he will not "easily give in" once the story needs him to.
Throughout the entire text he will stay true to his self and discount his own importance to the tale.
A lot of characters are initially introduced this way, but they often become "agreeable" at a convenient point in the book. For my purposes, it will work really well if he never does.
I'll fill you in more once my discussions of "WARBRIDE" are in full force. This is just a little teaser for now. _________________ ---Ken Kiser

Is there any way we could have a couple of threads devoted to serious projects, similar to the Challenge? I know you're working on Warbride, and I'll be tackling Iron Cross before long, so it might be nice to have threads devoted to the stories, so we don't end up with 500 threads about them! Just an idea. _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

Just create a WARBRIDE or THE IRON CROSS "Discussion thread' in the WIP Room. Just like the challenge room has.
Anyone who has a project is free to do so. If you would like to see your discussion thread stay active and near the top, then that's easy... post on it often!!!
I'll start mine later... I'm not in official writing mode for a few months yet. _________________ ---Ken Kiser

Kudos to you for doing this Fifthwind, and I hope you can pull it off. With that being said, the "reluctant hero" is something of a pet peeve for me. I understand that authors want someone that readers can identify with, but just once I'd like a young, inexperienced main character that doesn't complain and moan about his destiny to be the savior of the world or some such. _________________ "There are those to whom knowledge is a shield, and those to whom it is a weapon. I have somewhat of a reluctant character, simply from the standpoint that he refuses to be extraordinary. He's a little pudgy, a little dense upstairs, and if he helps the cause of the story, it's mostly accidental. His son is the one who becomes a god, who does all of the cool things and goes on to make a mark on history, while his dad sinks into alcoholism and depression, and finally suicide. _________________ To run from misery’s thrall to where only the knife-edged thrill stands before the endless fall…

I actually don't have anyone who's really 'reluctant'. My "new guy" is confused as hell at first, but eventually joins in, in part because he's rather bored with his life up until that point, and however unstable and bizarre his new companions, at least they're not boring.

See, that's something I could support. This may be an uncommon reaction, but I and all the other young adult males (and some females) that I know would be more enthusiastic about being given demi-god powers than is usual in typical fantasy novels. C'mon people, show some enthusiasm! The plot just handed you uber magical powers and a hot sidekick, the least you could do is be happy about it. And by happy I mean gleefully slaughter hordes of enemy goons. _________________ "There are those to whom knowledge is a shield, and those to whom it is a weapon. I think that's an awesome idea. It's refreshing. Because, really, when I watch a movie/read a book/play a videogame with the cliche 'reluctant hero' character, I always know it's just a matter of time until he 'mans up' and starts taking charge. It'd be a nice breath of fresh air (and a surprise) to see a character who didn't eventually give in that way. _________________ "Through the window pane,
