This is an excellent link concerning archetypes.

Laying out both Archetype and Shadow, the article discusses the role, reversed role, and examples of each archetype. As writers, these are things we should be aware of, as a character will most often fall into one role or perhaps a combination of roles. Subverting the archetype is another useful tool of writing.

Which archetype do you identify with or write? What literature or movie have you seen where these roles are easily identifiable?

Nice list... and easy to read.

It's important to understand the classic archetypes... not because they are cardboard cutouts ready to be given a name and thrown into a story, but because they help "define" a characters core motivations and serve as a constant reminder that will keep the writer on track.
