I've been on vacation away from work this week.

I've gotten quite a bit done on some writing projects. That is all going well.

but I also had time to go see three (3) movies, and here are my thoughts on them:

Hellboy2: Enjoyed it. The only problem was that the movie was trying to do TOO much. There were entire scenes that could have been taken out and it would have peen better. However, I'm a fan of Ron Perlman's acting in this role, so I give it pretty good marks.

WALL*E: I have never seen a slower starting movie. In fact, after about the first thirty minutes, I was ready to just get up and leave. Fortunately I didn't, because once it gets going... it was FANTASTIC. I still can't forgive them the utterly boring slow start though!

The Dark Knight:
The latest Batman flick is probably the best one yet. The characters were scripted with depth (particularly Gordon and Dent). The action sequences were good and the overall storyline was rewarding. There has been a lot of buzz about the late Heath Ledger's performance as "The Joker"... the buzz is deserved. He definitely deserves an Oscar nomination. If I had my way, he'd win. Yes, it was THAT GOOD of a performance.

I can't wait 'til the Dark Knight comes out on cinema here in Sweden. It's on thursday, and man, that'll be badass.

As for me, today, I re-watched a few old favorites of mine.

Blood Diamond - Well, it's a magical movie, simply put. It's horrible, but also beautiful, with a great story, and nothing less than loveable characters, especially the anti-hero, Danny Archer. And I must admit, I am kind of fond of Mr. van de Kaap's secretary (or whatever he is) also. He's a bit of a crook, but he's my kind of crook. Cool

City Hunter - The Motion Picture - This is an anime movie from around 1993 or so. City Hunter (who is sort of a hitman/mercenary in the Tokyo (Shinjuku to be specific) underworld), is tasked with stopping former Foreign Legionnaire and terrorist "the Professor" from blowing up a train packed with a nuke, in central Shinjuku. Needless to say, I love it - like all City Hunter OVA's and films, it's got a great story, and lots of emotion packed into it.

Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man - Well, let us be frank. It's a ridiculous film at points - specifically, whenever the badguys show up. But Don Johnson (aka Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice), and Mickey Rourke hold the film together simply by the chemistry they have. Some dude on IMDB said that it was a film by, for and about a different kind of man, that no longer exists. (I take it he means vagabonds). Anw, I can't but agree. Despite the ridiculous badguys, I love this movie, because, as I said, Don Johnson and Mickey Rourke has incredible chemistry together.

Oh, and there's two hotties in it; Tia Carerre, and a young Kelly Hu, who plays Suzie at the gas station in the beginning. She even gets to flirt with Harley Davidson. Wink

Marlboro: You know, that gun costs about two dollars every time you fire it. That's two bucks a bullet.
Harley Davidson: Well how many did I hit?
Marlboro: You spent twelve dollars and didn't hit a goddamn thing. I nailed one and it cost about four and a quarter.

*****
HD and the MBM is one of my favorite movies for the reasons you stated.

***I missed Kelly Hu (or at least, i didn't know that was her!)... now I've gotta go back and watch it again. Gotta get my Hu fix!

Edit: Yup.. that's my girl kelly:

I love that they had to put that text in the beginning. "This movie is not intended to identify or promote a product or trade name of existing companies." Rolling Eyes

And yeah, by the way, I love the intro song. It's amazing. Razz

Wow, someone else who saw Harley and Marlboro. I had never heard of that movie until I found it in the Circuit City bargain bin one day. As for Batman, I can't wait to see it but I'll be waiting until the crowds die down. If you liked Dent, then take comfort in knowing who he's going to be (they're setting up Twoface for the next movie to knock down.

Don't want to spoil it... but you're only half-right about Dent. Wink

Unless they do something stupid with the next film... Rolling Eyes

Romancing the Stone

Damn good adventure/romance film about a romance novelist who ends up in Colombia searching for the mysterious El Corazon ("the Heart"), and who hooks up with adventurer Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas). It's one of the best films I've seen in the genre. Beautifully made, exotic, and most importantly, it feels as if you're really there, in Colombia, with them.

And Danny DeVito is just great! Laughing

Just check him out in the trailer from 1984:

Wwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaallleeeeee

It was brilliant all the way through. Heartwarming, funny, visually spectacular, and only vaguely irritating 'humans must take responsibility' stuff at the end. I thought the beginning was great, without it you really wouldn't get the sense of Wall-E being all alone on the planet. And who needs dialogue anyway? Smile

I dunno, did you notice how the Joker was introduced at the very end of Batman Begins but there wasn't any villain specifically mentioned at the end of The Dark Knight? I'm nervous.

I wondered about that as well, maybe because of the length of the film proper they decided not to include a baddie introducing section. Also, they'll have been banking on having Ledger still alive and kicking. At this juncture they can do two things - say that the Joker's in Arkham and leave the character out completely, or find another actor. In a way I hope they go for the former, as Ledger's performance is just incredible and kinda deserves to be the definitive Joker for this particular run of 'Batman' films.

Edit: There are rumours that Angelina Jolie is going to be Catwoman, although whether it will be as a villain opposite Bale or in a sequel to Halle Berry's rubbish spin-off is unknown...

The villain for the next film will be the riddler.

Johnny depp has already gone public that he has been approached for the role.
