Has anyone read his books.

I've read the first book of his series and have read endless amounts of the others out of order just for inspirational purposes.

One thing that I can't fully get past, is his favoritism for narrative. We've talked before about trying for some level of balance but using what you are best at (between narrative and dialog) to carry the lion's share of the load.

But Mr. Goodkind has less dialog than almost any writer I've read. He loves narrative.

Fortunately, he's very good at it.

Wizard's First Rule is amazing. I haven't read it in a while so I can't remember the style very well, but I remember loving it. So what you're saying is that I should reread it for tips on how to do narrative?

His narrative is good, though perhaps at times pretentious.

I like to open his books to a random page and see what I kind learn. But, that's how I do most of my reading these days, in snippets without context. It's rare anymore for me to read cover-to-cover linearly.

One thing that both my mother and I discovered on reading his books was a worse-than-usual editing job. Literally, misspelled words, missing words, etc. Now I know that's not HIS fault, but really, it's irritating.

As for his story, I enjoyed reading his books, despite the rather poor reviews I've seen from a lot of people. Sometimes he leans into the cliche, but he's excellent at portraying relationships smoothly, and his sense of humor is great.

Then, who?

He wrote it. Sure a poor editor missed it, but it is THERE because of him.

He's a good writer, no doubt. But I don't think he proofs his work... I don't think ANYBODY proofs his work.

It must be nice to be considered this decade's golden boy. Wink

It's interesting, but Goodkind was one of my main examples (as I've recently finished reading his novels) of an author who is highly narrative in his storytelling style which is what prompted me to ask the question of Narrative vs. Dialogue. But he does a very good job of it.

I fell in love with his characters and I enjoy the humorous exchanges between them and really enjoyed his stories.

But for someone who has the accolades that he does, you would think that he would ensure that his books get edited thoroughly. Editing errors represent the author and gives them a bad name.

That being said, I would think that it would be a main focus for an author to ensure that it is thoroughly edited, but he is not the first author to have spelling, grammer mistakes in his works and probably wont be the last either.

Sadly, it is too easy to miss errors in a short story, much less a novel. Editors are slipping as badly as the rest of us it seems!

There are plenty of authors who have more skill than he does. But his work is highly readable, enjoyable, and for the size of the books, a light enough read.

Just to put this back into perspective, I didn't intend this to be a "Terry bashing session."

Mainly, I was pointing out his abundance of narrative compared to dialog.

Good writer.

But Terry-bashing is such fun! I mean, he bashes the fantasy genre often enough. Razz Okay, that's all I'm going to say on the subject.

I have three of his books in my shelves, but it's been years since last I read them ,so I don't remember much about the books, apart from the general story.
