Howdy folks! Just curious what type of enviornment you find is the easiest to write in.
Do you work best indoors or out? In a calm enviornment? A busling coffee shop?

Also do you listen to music at all while you write? If so what kind? Does it affect your writing?

I know I can't listen to slow paced music when writing a fast-paced scene, for some reason. Personally, I like to lounge back in a chair in a well-lit room (or out under the Snowcrab trees), turn off all the lights and the TV and what not and just lean back and write. Sometimes I'll play new age or world music when my brother mow's the lawn or the sprayers are flying over.

So how about you guys?

Personally, it varies for me. It depends on the scene that I'm writing, but I can write in my office at home or out in the midst of wilderness, in a nice quiet environment.

I only play music if I need a bit of inspiration as I find noise or any bustle is distracting.

As for the type of music, there is a music thread out there already, I think under the Off-topic area, but I listen to a variety. Rock, slow or hard, some celtic lyrics, whatever gets my creative juices flowing.

My writing environment usually involves a doona and a mug of strong tea. I like to have the house to myself and be able to type away without anyone asking me to do something.

As for music, something relaxing helps me. Usually I'm writing to Norah Jones or Damien Rice. Whatever tickles my fancy at the time.

I need absolute privacy. My bedroom, on my bed, and all other distractions blocked out as much as possible. I prefer to write in early morning, my curtains covered with a dark fabric to keep everything looking and feeling like midnight, except for the pages lit by my lamp. This can be bad for your eyes, but it does the trick. Smile

I don't think I have a time, place, or setting that is specific to writing. I write whenever I have the inspiration for something(which will invariably occur at some point every day). The most usual time is in the late evening, and I usually enjoy having lots of noise around to prevent me from overthinking.

I write best in the morning, when I'm alone. I usually don't bother dressing first, just wrap myself in a blanket, and I sit with the laptop on my lap.. Oh, and I drink tea as well, or maybe a hot chocolate with just a little bit of coffee in. Though I often forget all about it, until it gets cold, and then I no longer want it Razz And my writing environment isn't ideal, I know. I would have loved to have an office or something at home. Though with school started again and all, I'm thinking about doing my writing there. I'll try it, and see how it works at least.

Being currently unemployed, I've got a nice rythm going. Breakfast, get dressed, write (with a cup of tea or hot chocolate close by), browse the web for work, surf net.

I have found that cleaning my desk every now and then greatly helps, though. It's much more motivating to work when I don't have to take away a heap of books and papers first. And light is important.
