We all know that flying cars were an invention that humanity had looked forward to for quite some time leading up to the year two-thousand. But are flying cars really all they're cracked up to be? Would they create more problems than they would solve? Or would they be the ultimate in personal travel?

Let's see, how many idiots are on the road now? How much damage do they do? Oh, and they only have forward, backward and sideways to go.

Now put the small equivalent of a plane in the hands of the common idiot.

Heaven help us and saint mary protect us, it's gonna be a bloodbath.

Jetpacks are the way to go. Less dangerous to other people, more manoeuvrable and probably alot more fun Very Happy

And if they could invent some kind of forcefield around the user to protect them then there'd be no accidents at all!

Jetpacks need some sort of weather-protection then.

The other thing to consider is the problem of wind. You get storm conditions, and being in the air would be a really bad idea. I think it would be more problematic than airlines, with the smaller mass of the cars. You would also need some sort of landing zone built in, air-markers, a restructuring of the road system, etc.

A huge benefit I can see though is turning the roadways back into usable land.

I think we are all losing sight of one important fact here:

FLYING. FRIGGIN'. CARS.

I don't think flying cars will ever be practical, at least not in our lifetime, but I'll have to agree with this:

FLYING. FRIGGIN'. CARS.

Impracticality:
1. How do we make and enforce places where someone can and cannot fly a flying car?
2. We then need floating stop signs and stoplights.
3. If we don't use a roadsystem in the air, cars can go anywhere and will collide all the time.

Practicallity:
1. Easier routes to work/school
2. Faster routes as well.
3. More space left on mother earth.
4. Oh, and "Flying Friggin' Cars"

Anything else?

But you are assuming that the cars are manually controlled by people, which need not be the case. A tracking system would make perfect sense, and in that case your impracticality points all are moot.

And man, I wouldn't care if flying cars resulted in what could best be a daily bloodbath & an inferno of metal and flames. There would be flying cars in the world, man!

A better answer:

The Matrix Razz

Plug me in and use my ass as a battery as long as I'm convinced that I'm the guest of honor at a party in my own little magical world of Asian beauty queens...
