I completely agree with Bread. SW rocks hard. _________________ The Knights of the Pink Slippers are now recruiting!

The only problem I have with Star Wars has nothing to do with Star Wars (figger that one out)
It has to do with us Fantasy Writers...
George Lucas took the concept of "A Sacred Order of Noble and Virtuous Knights" and put them out in space and made that concept his own. And did a DAMN good job of it.
But, it's time for that Sacred order of Knights to find their way back home and regain their place as an honored part of Fantasy. I am making an attempt in the FW novels with "The Fahd" a small group of noble fighters who follow a sacred covenant and possess really cool "kinda magical" skills. _________________ ---Ken Kiser

Well FW, it was going to happen sometime.
I think that it proves that a "theme" like knights is a universal message. With a little tweaking of the environment anyone of us can write the same thing.
The challenge is how to make it all work. |

I don't know that I'd say outright "We need to take George Lucas' idea and bring it back to fantasy where it belongs." First of all, if you can tell at a glance where its "home" is, that's probably because you see it a lot, in which case it hardly needs to be brought back.
I do get many of my ideas from other works. Even on the subject of "an order of noble and virtuous knights," the golden age of my country coincided with the existence of the Phoenix Riders, a group of magic-wielding individuals who serve alternately as counsellors, bodyguards, and messengers for the ruling monarch. However, I picked up the idea (which I got by crossing Jedi Knights with Kristen Britain's Green Riders) because I'm entranced and excited by it, not because I think it ought to be a fantasy staple and I ought to set an example. Fantasy gets enough of a bad rap for being all the same, without me trying to push my ideas off on others. If I'm frustrated over something people are doing badly, like "we need to see more realistically written romances," that IMO is different from "we need to see more of X because we need to do it better than this other genre." |
